Female smokers at greater risk of brain bleeds

Bleeding inside the lining of the brain or subarachnoid hemorrhage is significantly more common among smokers, especially women, a new study has found.

Subarachnoid hemorrhage results from bleeding into the lining between the brain's surface and underlying brain tissue, researchers said. Although these are more common among women than they are among men, the reasons for this difference were unclear. While smoking is the main risk factor, researchers have now examined the association between smoking habits and subarachnoid hemorrhage.

"Female sex has been described as an independent risk factor for subarachnoid hemorrhage, but we found strong evidence that the elevated risk in women is explained by vulnerability to smoking," said Joni Valdemar Lindbohm from University of Helsinki in Finland. "Our results suggest that age, sex and lifestyle risk factors play a critical role in predicting which patients are at risk for subarachnoid hemorrhage and emphasise the importance of effective smoking cessation strategies," said Lindbohm.

Although cigarette smoking was linked to an increased risk of subarachnoid hemorrhage among both sexes, women faced the highest risk. Researchers found that among light smokers (1 to 10 cigarettes per day), women were 2.95 times more likely to have subarachnoid hemorrhage compared to non-smokers, while men who smoked comparable amounts of cigarettes were 1.93 times more
likely.

Women who smoked 11 to 20 cigarettes per day were 3.89 times more likely to have subarachnoid hemorrhage compared to non-smokers, while men who smoked comparable amounts of cigarettes were 2.13 times more likely, researchers said. Women who smoked 21 to 30 cigarettes per day were more than 8.35 times likely to have subarachnoid hemorrhage compared to non-smokers, while men who smoked comparable amounts of cigarettes were 2.76 times more likely, they said.

The study found that subarachnoid hemorrhage risk significantly decreased among former smokers. Women and men that quit smoking more than six months earlier had comparable risk to non-smokers. "There is no safe level of smoking. Naturally the best option is never to start. Quitting smoking, however, can reduce the risk for subarachnoid hemorrhage in both sexes," said Lindbohm.

The study participants included 65,521 adults in Finish national surveys. Slightly more than half of participants were women, and their average age was 45 years. The findings were published in the journal Stroke.

Check how Google is saving 40 per cent on energy bills

Google is using artificial intelligence to save as much as 40 per cent of energy it uses to cool its vast data centres.

According to the reports, the energy consumed at these centres, where Google processes all the information consumed by its users, could account around 2 per cent of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions.

However, Google has claimed responsibility of 0.01 per cent of global electricity.

The technology has been created at DeepMinds, a Cambridge-based artificial intelligence company, which was acquired by Google in the year 2014. The company used machine learning to understand the environment at the centres and made it more efficient, aimed towards reducing power usage.

Google said that DeepMind’s software has managed to reduce 15 per cent of total energy usage across 12 centres based in America, Europe and Asia. The company also added that it now gets 3.5 times of computing power out of the same amount of energy as it did five years ago.

In a blogpost, Google said that it is expecting to increase its energy usage at the rate of four per cent from 2014 to 2020. The company is also looking to be completely powered by renewable energy.

According to Google, the data centre algorithm can be used to improve efficiency in other areas.

In addition, the company also plans to benefit separate companies that are running on its cloud from the improved efficiency at the centre.

Producer Planning To File A Police Complaint against Hansika

Tamil film ‘Pokkiri Raja’s Producer PT Selvakumaris planning to lodge a police complaint against actress Hansika for cheating him.

The producer has already filed a complaint with Tamil Film Producers Council alleging Hansika has breached the agreement. Selvakumar accuses Hansika of not attending the audio launch of ‘Pokkiri Raja’ even after promising him earlier to attend the event.

He added that he had settled entire remuneration of Hansika for Pokkiri Raja and spent lakhs for her stay in a hotel room and traveling but Hansika has given a miss to the event at the last minute, incurring him a huge loss.

He is now demanding Hansika, to pay him the expense of the audio launch. Since Hansika didn’t bother about the complaint in Tamil Film Producer’s Council, Selvakumar plans to lodge a police complaint.

Dhoni praises Indian batting, says spin will come into play in West Indies

He does "miss playing Test cricket" and India's limited overs skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni is keeping a keen eye on the series against West Indies starting on Thursday, saying spinners will play a huge role in the Caribbean.

"I think wickets will be slower in West Indies but you never know. I think spinners will have a huge role to play," Dhoni told media persons at an event here today.

The skipper said what he finds impressive is that India now has a pool of 8 to 10 genuine quick bowlers. "The more the competition the better it is. It's good that finally we have a pool of 8-10 bowlers who are pushing for selection. If I look at a year back, during an ODI series against South Africa, there were a few bowlers who were injured.

"And we have bowlers with all areas covered. If you want pace we have that. If you want swing, we have that. Of course, we have to be careful about injury management," said Dhoni after his company Rhiti Sports' tie-up with former Australia pace bowler Craig McDermott's company Secured Venture Capital.

Why some people are more intelligent than others

The more variable a brain is and the more its different parts frequently connect with each other, the higher a person’s intelligence quotient (IQ) and creativity are, researchers have revealed for the first time.
In a bid to unlock the secrets of the human brain, a team of researchers led by the University of Warwick quantified the brain’s dynamic functions, identifying how different parts of the brain interact with each other at different times to discover how the intellect works.
More accurate understanding of human intelligence could lead to future developments in artificial intelligence.

Nayan’s Remuneration Shocked Producers

Nayanthara is probably the only actress who made a comeback to films and regained her top place.

While senior actresses like Trisha and Priyamani are struggling to get films, Nayanthara is moving at jet speed with movies opposite both young and senior heroes. She is scoring hits with heroine-oriented films and a pocketing handful of awards as well.

The other side of the coin tells about Nayan’s sky-high remuneration. She is one of the highest paid actresses of South already. Recently, when a producer approached Nayan with an offer to star opposite a senior Tamil hero, Nayan shocked him by quoting Rs 4 Cr remuneration. As she felt that no other heroine suits opposite the senior hero, she made such hefty demand. Even the producer knows she was his only option hence he is said to be reluctantly bargaining with her.

Twitter to give everyone 'blue ticks', verify all accounts

Starting today, the social media site, Twitter will provide ‘blue ticks’ badge to all its users. However, a verified status will be offered only to confirmed accounts, not to anonymous ones.

An application form has been made available to users, which requires to be filled with a verified phone number, an email address, a profile photo, and additional information. The account will then be verified by the website if determined to be of public interest.

Earlier, the ‘blue ticks’ badges were made available for the accounts of high-profile figures, such as a public figure, brands, and people in media, television, films, politics, and many more.

‘Our goal with this update is to help more people find great, high-quality accounts to follow, and for creators and influencers - no matter where they are in the world - to easily connect with a broader audience,’ said Tina Bhatnagar, Twitter’s vice president of user service in a blogpost.

As for now, Twitter has around 310 million monthly active users, of which around 187,000 are currently verified.

More than 3,200 migrants rescued in Mediterranean: Italian coast guard

More than 3,200 migrants were rescued from the Mediterranean Tuesday in 25 operations, the Italian coastguard said.

One person was found dead during the rescue efforts, said the coastguard Wednesday, which coordinated the missions conducted by the Italian navy and coastguard, the EU's Eunavfor Med mission and NGOs such as MSF, Sea Watch and MOAS.

The latest arrivals take the number of migrants to have landed in Italy this year to more than 80,000, according to the UN's refugee agency. Most of them are Africans.

Since 2014, more than 10,000 migrants have died or are feared to have drowned while attempting the perilous journey to Europe by sea, most losing their lives in the central Mediterranean, UNHCR says.

One step closer to the invisibility cloak

Scientists at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) have made an object disappear by using a composite material with nano-size particles that can enhance specific properties on the object’s surface. Researchers from QMUL’s School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, worked with the UK industry to demonstrate for the first time a practical cloaking device that allows curved surfaces to appear flat to electromagnetic waves.

While the research might not lead to the invisibility cloak made famous in J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter novels quite yet, this practical demonstration could result in a step-change in how antennas are tethered to their platform. It could allow for antennas in different shapes and sizes to be attached in awkward places and a wide variety of materials. Co-author, Professor Yang Hao from QMUL’s School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, said, “The design is based upon transformation optics, a concept behind the idea of the invisibility cloak. Previous research has shown this technique working at one frequency. However, we can demonstrate that it works at a greater range of frequencies making it more useful for other engineering applications, such as nano-antennas and the aerospace industry.”

The researchers coated a curved surface with a nanocomposite medium, which has seven distinct layers (called graded index nanocomposite) where the electric property of each layer varies depending on the position. The effect is to ‘cloak’ the object: such a structure can hide an object that would have caused the wave to be scattered. The underlying design approach has much wider applications, ranging from microwave to optics for the control of any kind of electromagnetic surface waves. First author Dr Luigi La Spada, also from QMUL’s School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, said, “The study and manipulation of surface waves is the key to develop technological and industrial solutions in the design of real-life platforms, for different application fields. We demonstrated a practical possibility to use nanocomposites to control surface wave propagation through advanced additive manufacturing. Perhaps most importantly, the approach used can be applied to other physical phenomena that are described by wave equations, such as acoustics. For this reason, we believe that this work has a great industrial impact.”

Sony to unveil new smartphone at IFA 2016

Rumour says Sony is set to unveil a range of new smart phones at the IFA 2016, which is scheduled to be held in the first week of September. It is expected to be a continuation of the Xperia Z series but with newer features.

Two devices namely, Sony F8331 and F8332 have been suggested to be a part of the release. Although, these aren’t reliably declared as the official names of the phones; due to the closeness between the two suggested model numbers, they seem to be belonging to the same family.

As per reports, the alleged Sony devices will be equipped with 5.1 – inch 1080p display and Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor along with a 3GB RAM and 32GB internal memory. The phone will also consist of a 21MP rear camera and a 12MP front – facing camera. However, the device will run on the same old Android 6.0.1.

What interestingly further confirms the rumour is that the model number, F8331 is the same as the one that recently showed up on GFX Bench. The report hails from Yibada, however; there is no other additional information provided on this matter.

Sony introduced Xperia X range of smart phones during MWC earlier this year. We’ll probably have to wait and watch whether this speculation is true and if it is -- will it be able to fuel the much – needed spark that Sony requires at the moment?
