Check how Google is saving 40 per cent on energy bills

Google is using artificial intelligence to save as much as 40 per cent of energy it uses to cool its vast data centres.

According to the reports, the energy consumed at these centres, where Google processes all the information consumed by its users, could account around 2 per cent of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions.

However, Google has claimed responsibility of 0.01 per cent of global electricity.

The technology has been created at DeepMinds, a Cambridge-based artificial intelligence company, which was acquired by Google in the year 2014. The company used machine learning to understand the environment at the centres and made it more efficient, aimed towards reducing power usage.

Google said that DeepMind’s software has managed to reduce 15 per cent of total energy usage across 12 centres based in America, Europe and Asia. The company also added that it now gets 3.5 times of computing power out of the same amount of energy as it did five years ago.

In a blogpost, Google said that it is expecting to increase its energy usage at the rate of four per cent from 2014 to 2020. The company is also looking to be completely powered by renewable energy.

According to Google, the data centre algorithm can be used to improve efficiency in other areas.

In addition, the company also plans to benefit separate companies that are running on its cloud from the improved efficiency at the centre.

Twitter to give everyone 'blue ticks', verify all accounts

Starting today, the social media site, Twitter will provide ‘blue ticks’ badge to all its users. However, a verified status will be offered only to confirmed accounts, not to anonymous ones.

An application form has been made available to users, which requires to be filled with a verified phone number, an email address, a profile photo, and additional information. The account will then be verified by the website if determined to be of public interest.

Earlier, the ‘blue ticks’ badges were made available for the accounts of high-profile figures, such as a public figure, brands, and people in media, television, films, politics, and many more.

‘Our goal with this update is to help more people find great, high-quality accounts to follow, and for creators and influencers - no matter where they are in the world - to easily connect with a broader audience,’ said Tina Bhatnagar, Twitter’s vice president of user service in a blogpost.

As for now, Twitter has around 310 million monthly active users, of which around 187,000 are currently verified.

Sony to unveil new smartphone at IFA 2016

Rumour says Sony is set to unveil a range of new smart phones at the IFA 2016, which is scheduled to be held in the first week of September. It is expected to be a continuation of the Xperia Z series but with newer features.

Two devices namely, Sony F8331 and F8332 have been suggested to be a part of the release. Although, these aren’t reliably declared as the official names of the phones; due to the closeness between the two suggested model numbers, they seem to be belonging to the same family.

As per reports, the alleged Sony devices will be equipped with 5.1 – inch 1080p display and Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor along with a 3GB RAM and 32GB internal memory. The phone will also consist of a 21MP rear camera and a 12MP front – facing camera. However, the device will run on the same old Android 6.0.1.

What interestingly further confirms the rumour is that the model number, F8331 is the same as the one that recently showed up on GFX Bench. The report hails from Yibada, however; there is no other additional information provided on this matter.

Sony introduced Xperia X range of smart phones during MWC earlier this year. We’ll probably have to wait and watch whether this speculation is true and if it is -- will it be able to fuel the much – needed spark that Sony requires at the moment?

WhatsApp will stop working on many phones end of 2016; which one do you have?

WhatsApp, the most popular messaging app platform, is used by almost 95 per cent smartphone users in India. However, there are a few smartphones that will not be able to use WhatsApp by end of this year. According to statements by the popular app service, WhatsApp will be pulled out from Symbian and BlackBerry BBOS this year.

WhatsApp has announced that December 31, 2016 will be the last day for support on Symbian and BlackBerry smartphones. This will also include Nokia S40. WhatsApp also mentioned that older smartphone operating systems on Android, Windows and iOS will also face the same wrath. The announcements were being made since March 2016, but no final date for the final support was made, however, it is now clear.

Those having older Android, iOS and Windows phones and others having feature phones with Symbian and BBOS will be affected. The move from WhatsApp comes in since the market prediction reveals that feature phones will be overtaken by smartphones from 2017 onwards.

Using WhatsApp on older smartphones and feature phones could pose a security threat later since there would be no more updates and security patches supplied by WhatsApp. Third-party developers would opt for the versions and tweak it in order to make them function. However, using a third-party or tweaked application is never recommended.

WhatsApp had announced the end of support for the said operating systems on their blog in February.

‘So, by the end of 2016, we will be ending support for WhatsApp Messenger on the following mobile platforms:

BlackBerry, including BlackBerry 10
Android 2.1 and Android 2.2
Nokia Symbian S60
Windows Phone 7.1
iPhone 3GS/iOS 6
Nokia S40

While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they don't offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app's features in the future. If you use one of these affected mobile devices, we recommend upgrading to a newer Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone before the end of 2016 to continue using WhatsApp.’
