Can India forge a lethal bowling attack overseas?

That cricket is a ‘batsman’s game’ is well touted. But it is high quality bowling, like we are seeing in the first Test between England and Pakistan underway currently, which makes the sport come alive.

So engaging has been the contest between batsmen and bowlers on the first two days at Lord’s that it has made the raging debate over the size and dimensions of the bat seem academic: at least temporarily.

All eyes were naturally on Mohammed Aamir on his return to international cricket after serving his five-year ban, but the ones who’ve grabbed the wickets — and headlines — have been Chris Woakes and Yasir Shah.

I am not overlooking the splendid century made by Misbah-ul-Haq. This was his first appearance at Lord’s and he made it memorable, saving his team from a crisis (yet again), and also sending out a message to his team as well as cricketers all over the world.

At 42, Misbah has the fitness and desire of somebody 15 years younger. Technical finesse and superb temperament has helped him to an impressive average around 50 though he started his career only when 34.

He is among the most inspirational figures in cricket today. Apart from fine batting ability, there is also the captaincy aspect to Misbah’s cricketing personality that is equally significant.

Under him Pakistan’s players, otherwise notoriously volatile and unpredictable, seem to have settled down and performed with a degree of pride and consistency that was sorely lacking. Only the imperious Imran Khan has been a better captain for his country in my opinion. But that’s a story for another day.

It is the success of bowlers so far in the first Test, particularly Woakes and Yasir, that is germane to this column.

Woakes showed splendid control and fine ability to swing the ball late, making up for the absence of James Anderson. Yasir, back from a three-month ban having failed a dope test, had English batsmen in a tail-spin with his fine repertoire of leg spin bowling.

That Yasir could get a five-wicket haul on the second day itself should dispel the notion that slow bowlers can only succeed in the third or fourth innings, after there has been sufficient wear and tear of the pitch.

The first Test is intriguingly poised and the series promises to be delightfully competitive, in contrast to the disappointingly one-sided contest between England and Sri Lanka earlier in the season.

This would not be possible if both teams did not have quality bowling. England’s surge as a Test team in the past couple of seasons is linked to the success of Anderson, Broad & Co, and Pakistan, despite a struggling batting side are still a threat to any team anywhere because of the bowling.

The larger point is that if not enough emphasis is paid to bowling, it affects a team’s win-worthiness adversely. The instances of a series being won by batsmen alone are negligible in Test history; those won by teams with modest batting but strong bowling is plentiful.

This is the big challenge confronting Virat Kohli and Anil Kumble as India start their four-Test series against the West Indies next week: can India forge a bowling attack that can win matches consistently, more particularly overseas? India’s bowlers have never been able to overrun even modest opponents outside of the sub-continent.

Part of the problem has been ability, of course, but there are other factors too, with fitness and self-belief being paramount. In recent years, the team has often had the opponent on the mat, only to squander the opportunity.

Bowlers would tend to flag, and with that the motivation to win too. The away series’ against South Africa and New Zealand (2013-14), England (2014) and Australia (2014-15) bear this out amply.

This is the mindset and physical limitations that Kohli and Kumble need to overcome. The bowlers can’t be allowed to remain in the comfort zone that they can always prove their credentials in home conditions. The West Indies are not the strongest Test team currently. But how India’s bowlers fare, how many Tests are won and how emphatic these victories are will define how the team evolves going ahead.

Today’s brides and grooms are so mush in love! And they ain’t hiding it

Not everyone can build a Taj Mahal to immortalize their love. However, you can certainly express it through different ways and means. And if you do it in a way that touches the heart, nothing can be more moving than this.

In an ongoing trend, people are going all out to express their love for their partners on their wedding day. They are coming up with unique ideas to express their love for each other.

Avinash Dwivedi, who recently tied the knot with his long time actor girlfriend Sambhavna Seth, did something overwhelming at their Mehendi. Seeing his bride-to-be getting his name written on her palm, he decided to do the same. “I saw her putting in so much effort while putting on the mehendi. This was the least I could have done for her,” he says.

Designer Kresha Bajaj took on the mammoth task of stitching her love story on her bridal lehenga. Her inspiration was from the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Adrienne Maloof who immortalized her wedding gown by getting it framed. Little did she know that people are going to adore her work so much.

And not just human beings even animals were involved in the act of “mushy marriage”. Vidisha Shah and Gowrang, who got married in December last year carried their dog along to the aisle because Gowrang had proposed Vidisha by gifting her the dog. And when the D-day came, they didn’t to leave their pet behind.

According to designer Suneet Varma, “Since love marriages are happening more than arranged marriages, most of them have a love story to share and they want it to be remembered. What could be a better way of remembering the moment than picking up a souvenir on the wedding.”
“Clients come to me asking for customized clutches with the couple’s name embossed on it. Couples want something unique and they want to profess it to the world that they are taken,” he adds.

Psychologist Pulkit Sharma feels that this is very creative and personalized expression of love. “I think the goal should be to please your partner instead of showing off to the world how innovative you were in professing your love. That’s where the line has to be drawn.”

Ajith’s 57 Movie Started

Tamil Star hero Thala Ajith’s 57th film is getting ready to start its regular shooting schedule. This flick is temporarily referred as ‘AK 57’ . It has been launched last week with a formal pooja. It was being said that the regular shooting will start in the 1st week of September, and the film team will soon go to Bulgaria where they are going to shoot some major scenes.

As for the latest updates, Kajal Aggarwal has been confirmed as the female lead in this 57th flick of Ajith. “AK 57” is the third film in Thala Ajith and director Siva’s combination, where the previous two films “Veeram” and “Vedalam” are super hits. This upcoming venture is being produced on a large scale by Sathya Jyothi Films banner, and Ajith will be seen as a detective this time. It was earlier known that after this project, Ajith’s 58th film is going to be produced by Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan.

NASA’s next Mars rover set for 2020 launch

The US space agency is ready to proceed with the final design and construction of its next Mars rover, currently targeted to launch in the summer of 2020 and arrive on the Red Planet in February 2021, NASA said.
The Mars 2020 rover will investigate a region of Mars where the ancient environment may have been favourable for microbial life, probing the Martian rocks for evidence of past life.
“This mission marks a significant milestone in NASA’s Journey to Mars - to determine whether life has ever existed on Mars, and to advance our goal of sending humans to the Red Planet,” said Geoffrey Yoder, Acting Associate Administrator of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington.
Throughout its investigation, it will collect samples of soil and rock and cache them on the surface for potential return to Earth by a future mission.
“The Mars 2020 rover is the first step in a potential multi-mission campaign to return carefully selected and sealed samples of Martian rocks and soil to Earth,” Yoder noted.
To reduce risk and provide cost savings, the 2020 rover will look much like its six-wheeled, one-tonne predecessor, Curiosity, which landed on Mars in 2012, but with an array of new science instruments and enhancements to explore Mars as never before, NASA said in a statement.
The Mars 2020 rover will use the same sky crane landing system as Curiosity, but will have the ability to land in a more challenging terrain with two enhancements, making more rugged sites eligible as safe landing candidates, the US space agency pointed out.
The Mars 2020 mission has already passed an extensive review process and a major development milestone.
Once a mission receives preliminary approval, it must go through four rigorous technical and programmatic reviews -- known as Key Decision Points (KDP) to proceed through the phases of development prior to launch.
Phase A involves concept and requirements definition, Phase B is preliminary design and technology development, Phase C is final design and fabrication, and Phase D is system assembly, testing, and launch. Mars 2020 has just passed its KDP-C milestone.
“Since Mars 2020 is leveraging the design and some spare hardware from Curiosity, a significant amount of the mission’s heritage components have already been built during Phases A and B,” George Tahu, Mars 2020 Programme Executive at NASA Headquarters in Washington said.
“With the KDP to enter Phase C completed, the project is proceeding with final design and construction of the new systems, as well as the rest of the heritage elements for the mission,” Tahu added.

Cricket on guard after golf leaves gaping hole in Rio

It’s the Olympic season, and participation and winning will be the flavours when people head to the land of Samba, Pele and football.
Despite the political, law and order and organisational mess that Brazil finds itself in, athletes and visitors will flock to Rio when the Olympics open on August 5.
CAN’T MISS
There are many who will miss out, and won’t be happy. Ask India’s double Olympic-medallist Sushil Kumar or discarded women’s hockey skipper Ritu Rani. Or, the Russian athletes barred amid charges of state-sponsored doping.
But the world’s leading golfers are turning their backs on Rio. The Zika virus is a big concern, but many others couldn’t really be bothered to take a break in their pro schedule.
Nostalgia would have been a factor in the International Olympic Committee including golf in Rio. After all, it had last featured in the 1904 Games.
THE WARNING
In the bygone amateur era, it would have been fair to slam the players for choosing money over medal. Australia’s former world No 1, Adam Scott, among the first to withdraw, was heavily criticised, among others by swimming legend Dawn Fraser.
The world’s top four players, led by Aussie Jason Day won’t go. The IOC president, Thomas Bach, has said withdrawals for reasons other than Zika will be a factor when it considers whether to retain golf in future Olympics.
But golf lives in a seemingly impregnable world. Tradition, sense of fairplay, Tiger Woods, everything has made it a truly global sport. In an age of thin margins, golf is affluent. And the message is clear: It can do without the Games.
CRICKET’S RESPONSE
There is a lesson in it for cricket. Cricket was part of the London Olympics opening ceremony, but was last played in Paris in 1900. Its inclusion anyway will be a complicated affair.
The IOC’s decision to let organisers of future Games choose some of their favourite disciplines may anyway reduce cricket’s chances. The ICC hopes cricket is directly included by the IOC to avoid the hassle of dealing with national Olympic committees and ensure a financial windfall, according to reports.
But there are two big questions. What will the ICC do if big names keep away. India’s cricket Board for instance has not fielded a team in the Commonwealth Games after cricket’s debut in 1998.
Besides, why should the ICC give up the primacy of its events? The World Twenty20, which it wants to stage every two years, is a money-spinner, not to speak of the T20 leagues like the IPL and Big Bash League. It won’t want the gleam of the Olympic gold dim its lustre.
SE COND THOUGHTS
Like golf, cricket’s elite too live in their universe. An IPL title may resonate better than an Olympic medal. Cheering for compatriots fighting for a podium spot is one thing, taking part and dealing with issues like ambush marketing will be seen as too much of a hassle for endorsement-rich players, particularly from India.
ICC CEO, Dave Richardson conceded golf has shone a light for cricket. “It raises a question, ‘Is it really good for cricket?’” he asked the media on Thursday. “Will cricketers see the Olympics as the pinnacle, or would they rather play (in a WT20 etc.)?”
Cricket’s globalisation too has not led to an even spread of the game. The massive TV viewership in the sub-continent could be the biggest draw for the IOC.
And then, cricket, if included, could take a cue from football. Fifa allowing essentially an under-23 Olympic tournament has ensured the World Cup retains its global primacy.
Tennis is in a happy place though; its top players are glad to fight for the fifth Grand Slam every four years.

Twitter, Facebook move quickly to stem celebrations of Nice attack

Twitter Inc moved swiftly to remove posts from Islamic extremists glorifying a truck attack in Nice, France, watchdog groups said Friday, in a rare round of praise for a platform that has often struggled to contain violent propaganda.

A spate of violence over the past several months has posed numerous challenges to social media companies. The unfolding military coup in Turkey was marked first by restrictions on social media, internet monitoring groups said, but the crackdown appeared to ease as the events unfolded and numerous citizens broadcast live video on Facebook and sent tweets.

US and French authorities on Friday were still trying to determine whether the Tunisian man who drove a truck into Bastille Day crowds on Thursday, killing 84 people, had ties to Islamic terrorists.

At least 50 Twitter accounts praising the attacks used the hashtag Nice in Arabic, according to the Counter Extremism Project, a private group that monitors and reports extremist content online. Many accounts appeared almost immediately after the attack and shared images praising the carnage, the group said.

The pattern was similar to what was seen on Twitter after attacks last year and earlier this year in Paris and Brussels. But Twitter, which once took a purist approach to free speech but has since revised its rules, took action much more quickly this week.

"Twitter moved with swiftness we have not seen before to erase pro-attack tweets within minutes," Counter Extremism Project said in a statement. "It was the first time Twitter has reacted so efficiently."

Rabbi Abraham Cooper, head of the Simon Wiesenthal Center's Digital Terrorism and Hate project, also said Twitter had responded with unusual alacrity.

Twitter did not provide any information about account suspensions, but said in a statement that it condemns terrorism and bans it on its site.

Twitter, Facebook Inc and other internet firms have ramped up their efforts over the past two years to quickly remove violent propaganda that violates their terms of service.

Both companies continue to face major challenges in distinguishing between graphic images that are shared to glorify or celebrate attacks and those shared by witnesses who are documenting events.

Facebook's "community standards" dictate what types of content are and are not allowed on the platform. Those standards explicitly ban "terrorism" and related content, such as posts or images that celebrate attacks or promote violence.

Yet the company's policies around graphic images are more nuanced. Facebook, like most large internet companies, relies on users and eagle-eyed advocacy groups to report objectionable content to teams of human editors, who then review each submission and decide whether a post should be deleted.

At Facebook, those reviewers receive more specific guidance beyond the public community standards when it comes to deciding what to do with reported graphic images, a spokeswoman said. But she declined to elaborate on the company's criteria.

"One of the most sensitive situations involves people sharing violent or graphic images of events taking place in the real world. In those situations, context and degree are everything," Facebook said in a blog post last week.

New Tactics

Internet companies have continually updated their terms of service over the past two years to establish clearer and in many cases stricter ground rules on what content is permissible on their platforms.

In response to pressure by US lawmakers and counterextremism groups, Facebook and YouTube have moved recently toward implementing some automated processes to block or rapidly remove ISIS videos and similar material.

That has not stopped Islamist terrorists from celebrating attacks online and even updating their tactics. Some ISIS supporters used Twitter hashtags that were trending globally to celebrate the Nice attacks, such as #PrayForNice, #NiceAttack and #Nice, so that their tweets were shown to a wider audience, according to screenshots from the Wiesenthal Center.

Santhanam Teams Up With Selva Raghavan

In a surprising announcement, it has been revealed that actor Santhanam is going to team up with the sensational director Selva Raghavan. This is surely going to be a rare combination as Selva Raghavan who is known for making different films has been teaming up with the actor who is known for comic roles. The actor’s last outing ‘Dhillukku Dhuttu’ was a huge hit at the box-office.

“Hi friends very glad to announce my next project in association with director @selvaraghavan . More details reg. the project to follow soon.” revealed Santhanam on his Twitter profile. “Very happy to announce that my next film will be starring @iamsanthanam ..looking forward.” revealed Selva Raghavan about the project. The Tamil film industry was surprised about the announcement of the film.

Foreign and domestic policies make France 'most threatened country'

Paris: After two militant attacks in Paris killed 17 people in January last year, Islamic State's French-language magazine Dar al-Islam appeared with the Eiffel Tower on the cover and the headline "May Allah curse France".

France was struck again last November, with 130 dead in gun and bomb attacks in Paris, and now in Nice, where at least 84 people were killed by a truck that ploughed through crowds after a fireworks display on Thursday evening.

"Terrorism is a threat that weighs heavily on France and will continue doing so for a long time," Prime Minister Manuel Valls said on Friday while vowing Paris would fight back.

France's counter-terrorism chief Patrick Calvar said as much to a parliamentary committee last May, when the main fear was about security for the Euro 2016 football championship this summer. In the end that tournament went off without any major incident.

"Today, France is clearly the most threatened country," the head of the general directorate for internal security (DGSI) said. "The question about the threat is not to know 'if' but 'when' and 'where'."

The reasons that make France a prime target for radical Islamist groups range from its present-day military operations all the way to - at least in Islamic State's propaganda the Crusades from the 11th to 15th centuries when Christians battled Muslims in the Middle East.

The country, which has Europe's largest Muslim minority, also has a steadfastly secular culture that sidelines religion in public life, typified by a ban on Islamic face veils in public and headscarves in state schools and the civil service.

Supporters say this encourages a common French identity but critics say it alienates non-Christian minorities, who see many vestiges of France's traditional Catholicism - such as official holidays for Christmas and Easter - but little leeway for them.

Military operations

After the Paris attacks, Islamic State said France and other countries fighting alongside it would remain threatened as long as they pursued "their crusader campaign" in Syria and Iraq.

France conducts air strikes and special forces operations against the group and trains Iraqi government and Kurdish forces. In his reaction to the Nice attack, President Francois Hollande vowed to step up those efforts against Islamic State.

"France is gripped by an irrational and deaf hatred against Islam and Muslims that pushed it to the head of the coalition against the caliphate," Dar al-Islam wrote last year, referring to the territory controlled by Islamic State in Syria and Iraq.

Paris also has troops in west Africa, where it helps keep Islamist insurgents at bay in several countries. In 2011, it took a leading role in the NATO-led air strikes against Libya while rebels it supported fought to oust strongman Muammar Gaddafi.

This active role in the Middle East and Africa goes back to France's past colonial role there, and retaliation attacks on French soil date at least to the Algerian War of 1954-1962.

On the home front

With robust policies limiting the visibility of religion in the public sphere, France also has domestic policies that anger Islamist militants.

Some in the five-million-strong Muslim community, about 8 per cent of the population, complain of discrimination and many Muslims live in poorer neighbourhoods in the large cities.

Fathers play key role in child development: study

Fathers play a 'surprisingly' key role in their children's development, from language and cognitive growth in toddlerhood to social skills in fifth grade, according to a new study.

The research provides some of the most conclusive evidence to date of fathers' importance to children's outcomes and reinforces the idea that early childhood programmes should focus on the whole family, including mothers and fathersalike. "There is this whole idea that grew out of past research that dads really do not have direct effects on their kids, that they just kind of create the tone for the household and that moms are the ones who affect their children's development," said Claire Vallotton from Michigan State University in the US.

"But here we show that fathers really do have a direct effect on kids, both in the short-term and long-term," said Vallotton. Researchers found that fathers play a surprisingly large role in their children's development, from language and cognitive growth in toddlerhood to social skills in fifth grade. Using data from about 730 families, researchers studied the effects of parents' stress and mental health problems such as depression on their children.

Parental stress and mental health issues affect how parents interact with their children and, subsequently, childhood development. The study found that fathers' parenting-related stress had a harmful effect on their children's cognitive and
language development when the children were two to three years old, even when the mothers' influences were taken into account.

This impact varied by gender; fathers' influence, for example, had a larger effect on boys' language than girls' language, researchers said. Another key finding was that fathers' and mothers' mental health had a similarly significant effect on behaviour problems among toddlers, they said. Fathers' mental health had a long-term impact, leading to differences in children's social skills (such as self-control and cooperation) when the children reached fifth grade. In fact, fathers' depression symptoms when children were toddlers were more influential on children's later social skills than were mothers' symptoms, researchers said.

"A lot of family-risk agencies are trying to get the dad more involved, but these are some of the things they could be missing," said Tamesha Harewood from Michigan State. The findings were published in the journals Early Childhood Research Quarterly and Infant and Child Development.

3 Songs in Ram Charan’s Dhruva

Mega Power Star Ram Charan’s upcoming latest entertainer “Dhruva” shooting is at a brisk space, and here is the shocking news for Ram Charan fans, who like his dance, this film is going to have only 3 songs. It is a remake of Tamil super hit film “Thani Oruvan” which also has only three songs and out of these one song as the title song, the second song comes under background score, and the third song is in the second half as a romantic song between hero and heroine. Now, the same is followed for “Dhruva,” where the makers thought that if an extra song is added, then the story will lose its flow, so the makers decided it’s better to go with only 3 songs.

This Ram Charan’s Crime Thriller “Dhruva” is being directed by Surender Reddy and produced by Allu Aravind under his banner Geetha Arts. Rakul Preet Singh is playing the female lead whereas Aravind Swamy is playing a villain in the film. The movie makers are planning to release the film in October 1st week.

Indian scientist helps design telescope that can be assembled by robots in space

Los Angeles: Scientists, including one of Indian-origin, have designed an extremely large telescope that can be assembled by a robot in space to help enhance the ability of astronomers to peer deep into the cosmos. A new concept in space telescope design makes use of a modular structure and an assembly robot to build an extremely large telescope in space, performing tasks in which astronaut fatigue would be a problem.

Ground-based telescopes are limited by atmospheric effects and by their fixed location on the Earth. Space-based telescopes do not have those disadvantages but have other limits, such as overall launch vehicle volume and mass capacity.

Design of a modular space telescope that overcomes restrictions on volume and mass may allow telescope components to be launched incrementally, enabling the design and deployment of extremely large space telescopes. The robotically assembled modular space telescope (RAMST) designed by Nicolas Lee and colleagues at the California Institute of Technology and the NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in the US focuses primarily on a robotic system to perform tasks in which astronaut fatigue would be a problem.

"Our goal is to address the principal technical challenges associated with such an architecture, so that future concept studies addressing a particular science driver can consider robotically assembled telescopes in their trade space," said researchers including Rudranarayan Mukherjee, from the Jet Propulsion Lab.

The main features of the proposed architecture include a mirror built with a modular structure, a robot to put the telescope together and provide ongoing servicing, and advanced metrology technologies to support the assembly and operation of the telescope. An optional feature is the potential ability to fly the unassembled components of the telescope in formation.

The system architecture is scalable to a variety of telescope sizes and would not be not limited to particular optical designs. "The capability to assemble a modular space telescope has other potential applications," said Harley Thronson, from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Centre. "For example, astronomers using major ground-based telescopes are accustomed to many decades of operation, and the Hubble Space Telescope has demonstrated that this is possible in space if astronauts are available," Thronson said.

"A robotic system of assembly, upgrade, repair, and resupply offers the possibility of very long useful lifetimes of space telescopes of all kinds," he said. The study was published in the Journal of Astronomical Telescopes, Instruments and Systems.

Five ways to groom your beard this monsoon

One of the most common problems a man faces when he likes to keep a full beard is itching and acne. And monsoon season worsens these problems. Regularly trim your beard, use oil and keep it clean, says an expert.
Geetika Mittal Gupta, Dermatologist and Medical Director, ISAAC, shares a few tips to take proper care of your beard:
Regular trimming: Even when you plan to grow out your beard, it is necessary to use a trimmer to keep maintaining its shape and growth. Know what will suit your face shape and what look you desire. Trim your beard accordingly.
Keep it clean: It is important to keep your beard clean as facial hair gets dirty too. Wash it thoroughly and regularly. If you’ve a long beard, it is preferable to use a beard wash. A face wash works well for a stubble or trimmed beard. Use a leave on conditioner or a beard softener to maintain its cleanliness.
Use beard oil: Beard oil helps in maintaining the moisture of the skin beneath the beard. Just dab a few drops of oil onto your finger tips and work it thoroughly on your beard and the skin underneath. Beard oil also works in maintaining the shine of your beard, making it look healthy and full.
Use non-comedogenic moisturiser: Comedogenic means the moisturiser contains ingredients that can clog your glands and may lead to whiteheads, blackheads and pimples. So make sure your face moisturiser is labeled non-comedogenic.
Eat right: A beard is just another form of hair growth, and nothing works well for hair other than proteins. So consume a lot of proteins by eating green vegetables like peas, broccoli and spinach. Consumption of good proteins helps in better and healthy growth of the beard.

Pakistan Cricket Board buys bulletproof buses to woo back visiting teams

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has bought four bulletproof buses as it tries to convince other teams to shed their security apprehensions and visit the country.

Pakistan has largely been shunned by teams since 2009 when gunmen attacked a bus carrying Sri Lankan cricketers, injuring six players and killing six security personnel and two civilians.
The incident has forced Pakistan to play their ‘home’ matches at the United Arab Emirates and the country has since remained starved of international cricket at home, barring Zimbabwe’s limited-overs tour in 2015.
“We have bought these four Coaster buses as part of our efforts to revive international cricket in the country,” a PCB spokesman told ESPNcricinfo.
“There will be high expectations from teams willing to visit Pakistan and we want to ensure that we provide them with the best possible arrangements.
“Having these bulletproof vehicles would play a major part in convincing teams (about security arrangements).”
The spokesman said PCB wanted to host the final of the Pakistan Super League, the inaugural edition of which was held in UAE earlier this year.
“We have to have discussions with the (overseas) players about their safety and security and I think this new addition in our security facilities will definitely give us an edge,” the spokesman said.
“Our ultimate goal is to revive international cricket, and we are doing our best to make sure we can.”
